Setting Up the Bar Step by Step

An ordered procedure: zones on the table, containers, scoops, labels and refills.

Step 1 — choose the spot. Place the table on an interior wall out of the sun path, at least a metre from heaters and away from kitchen doors. Chocolate starts to soften and bloom around 30-32 C, so a sunny window or a position above a radiator will spoil the candy within an hour on a warm day.

Step 2 — mark the zones. Divide the table into three sections: sweet at one end, salty in the middle, fresh at the other. Put the nut-free items at the very start of the row, before anything containing nuts, so guests do not carry nut residue down the line.

Step 3 — set the containers. Crisps and popcorn go into airtight containers, because humidity is the main reason snack tables go stale. Open only what fits the tray and keep the backup stock closed behind or under the table.

Step 4 — place the scoops. One serving scoop of 30-60 ml per candy jar, never shared between jars. A shared scoop is the fastest way to move an allergen from a peanut jar into a plain caramel jar.

Step 5 — label everything. A printed label on every jar with the snack name and its allergens, plus a stack of small paper bags at the end of the row. A labelled jar per snack type plus small paper bags lets guests serve themselves without touching shared food.

Step 6 — run the refills. Check jars every 30-45 minutes and top up before a jar runs dry rather than after. At the end of the party, return everything to airtight containers the same evening — crisps and popcorn left in open trays overnight are soft by morning.
